What's standing in your way?

I was reflecting today on all of the things that have occurred to/with me in the last few years that have contributed to path I am now on. I wondered at the accomplishments I have had, as well as the dismal failures. I reflected on what would have made this process smoother, what stood in my way at certain times, and how I might have more easily overcome barriers that have been in my path. This kind of life review is informative, but also filled me with a little chagrin as I realised how difficult I made my own journey. So I thought, I would pass on the benefits of this morning’s meditation so that perhaps you could avoid, or at least more easily surmount the things standing in your way.

Naturally, a lot of these things are GREAT in hind sight and sometimes appear more easily said than done. You never know though, perhaps reading it here, and benefitting from my experiences, you might find that these things are far more easily done than you think at first. *smile*

There are several categories of “things” that may be stopping you.

Personal: This is the biggest category, because in my experience, we generally are our own worst enemies and sometimes seem to go out of our way to make things difficult for ourselves.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself to help start the process…

1.       Are you afraid? Nothing wrong with being afraid to start with, but let’s decide what you are afraid of. Are you afraid to appear different? Are you afraid to fail? Are you afraid that you will never find the right path? Are you afraid of being alone or conversely connecting with others? Are you afraid that who you are right now is not good enough for the plan you have? Are you afraid of confronting your own issues?

Fear is the main thing that holds most people back from following their path and being the person they wish to be. None of these fears is insurmountable. Make yourself a commitment to love yourself, to overcome fear through love and forgiveness. Imagine it was a close friend or loved one coming to you with these fears and asking for your help in overcoming them. What would you advise them to do? How would you help them? Then follow your own advice…it WILL be right.

2.       Do you know yourself? If you don’t really know who you are, what you stand for, the things you like and don’t like, then it is going to be trickier for you to move forward to the place you wish to be.

Sit quietly with yourself for a few minutes a day, let your mind wander, reflect on what you believe in and who you really are. Determine those things you are REALLY passionate about and those you are indifferent to. Really know yourself.

3.       Do you have a plan? All things go smoother if you have a bit of a plan. I am not necessarily talking about a detailed picture of every action you might take in the next 50 years, but a general idea of what you desire and the steps you might take to get there.

A great way to start this process is with a visualisation folder or wall etc. Cut out/draw pictures, write lists, get information about where it is you want to go and the things you want to do. You can leave the details up to your team, but have an idea of where you want to go. Start with a one year plan and move on from there.

Our own biggest enemy when it comes to living the life we choose is our selves. Consider your fears, your influences and the barriers you put in your own way. Make a commitment to yourself to overcome these things with love, forgiveness and compassion.

Tomorrow, after having time to digest a little of these things (phew…they’re a bit huge) I’d love to talk about some other “things that seem to get in the way”

With love, light and belief
